  • It is the 5th tiger reserve in the state of Tamil Nadu after the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
  • This tiger reserve has been formed by combining the areas of Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary and Srivilliputtur Wildlife Sanctuary.

52nd Tiger Reserve in India

  • India’s 52nd Tiger Reserve was announced by the Ministry of Forest and Environment and Climate Change on July 2021 in Rajasthan named Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve.

  • The tiger reserve has a total area of 529.89 km2, including a 299.58 km2 buffer zone and a 230 km2 core of the Ranipur Wildlife Sanctuary declared in 1977.

  • The tiger census in India is organized at an interval of every 4 years and the M-STrIPES [Monitoring System for Tigers – Intensive Protection and Ecological Status] app is used to count tigers.
  • The number of tigers increased from 1411 in the 2006 census to 2967 in the 2018 census with an annual growth rate of 6%.
  • On the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told about the latest number of tigers in India and according to the report of April 2023, the population of tigers in India is 3,167. According to the latest census – total number of tigers in India has seen a significant increase of 200, increasing from 2,967 to 3,167 in the last four years from 2019-2023.
