  • Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L’Huillier were selected as winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2023.
  • These three scientists “developed experimental methods for studying electron mobility in the matter by generating attosecond pulses of light”.
  • Pierre Agostini is a French citizen, Ferenc Krausz is an Austrian of Hungarian origin and Anne L’Huillier is a French citizen.
  • The Nobel Committee believes that their experiment will be of great help in understanding the world of electrons present in elements and substances.
  • Anne Hullier has become the fifth woman to win a Nobel in the field of Physics. Till now, 119 people have been given this honor in the field of Physics.

Experiments Setup

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 – The setup for the experiment was prepared by these scientists in the following steps.

  1. First of all a laser light is divided into 2 parts.
  2. To produce an attosecond pulse, the first light is deflected in a specified direction and passed through an inert gas.
  3. On the other hand, the light on the other side is reflected several times while keeping it in its original form so that it reaches the observation with a delay.
  4. After this, the attosecond pulse is passed through a filter and mixed with the second laser light.
  5. In this way, the movement of electrons can be studied in a better way.

Study of Electrons

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 – The whole world is made of matter. At the same time, matter is made up of countless elements. An element has many electrons which exist in different orbitals. They keep moving continuously. When electrons move from one orbit to another, their energy levels change.

To understand this change, the help of an attosecond pulse of light is taken. These scientists developed methods through which microscopic waves of light were generated. This will help in studying the movement of electrons and the change in energy occurring in them.

Nobel Prize in Physics

Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 – On 27 November 1895, Alfred Nobel signed his last will and testament. With this, he gave the largest part of his will to a series of awards, the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Prize is given in the fields of Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences.

According to Alfred’s will, the Physics Nobel Prize is awarded to the person who has made the most important discovery or invention in the field of physics. A total of 119 Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Physics from 1921 to 2023.

Physics Nobel Prizes were not awarded in 1916, 1931, 1934, 1940–41 and 1942. This decision was taken by the Nobel Foundation. According to Nobel Foundation rules, if any discovery or invention does not meet the prescribed criteria, then the prize money is kept reserved till the next year. Fewer Nobel Prizes were given during World War-1 and 2.

So in this way, we have read about the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2023. We hope you liked this article.
