The Chandrayaan 3 mission is the third mission to the Moon by the Indian Space Agency ISRO. Before understanding about Chandrayaan 3 mission, you need to know about the Chandrayaan 2 mission. The Chandrayaan 2 mission was launched by ISRO on 22 July 2019. The Chandrayaan 2 mission included Orbiter, Lander, and Rover. In the Chandrayaan 2 mission, the orbiter was successfully placed in the Moon’s orbit, while the rest of the mission was unsuccessful due to the crash landing of the lander.
- You can say that Chandrayaan 3 mission is an Extended version of Chandrayaan 2. In the Chandrayaan 3 mission, except for the orbiter, only the lander and the rover will be launched.
- In the Chandrayaan 3 mission, the Vikram lander will land on the high ground of the Moon’s South Pole.
- If the Chandrayaan 3 mission is successful then India will be the fourth country in the world after America, Russia, and China to make a soft landing on the moon.
Chandrayaan 3 Launch Date and Timing
- Chandrayaan 3 was successfully launched by ISRO on July 14, 2023, at 2.35 PM from the Satish Dhawan Space Center located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
- Chandrayaan 3 mission will be launched with the help of Launch Vehicle Mark III (LVM3) M4 rocket.
- Chandrayaan 3 successfully soft-landed on the lunar surface on August 23, 2023, at 06:04 PM.
- India became the first country in the world to successfully land on the South Pole of the Moon.

Chandrayaan 3 Mission Timeline
Chandrayaan 3 mission will be completed in 3 parts –
- Chandrayaan 3’s lander Vikram will make a soft landing on the lunar surface.
- After this, the rover Pragyan will come out of the lander and move to the surface of the moon.
- Pragyan Rover will collect information about the elements present on the surface of the Moon.
Soft Landing on the Moon
Two types of landing are done under any mission on the moon.
- Hard landing
- Soft landing
Under the Chandrayaan 3 mission, India aims for a soft landing on the south pole of the Moon. Before India, America, Russia, and China succeeded in getting a soft landing on the moon.
Why is landing on the moon dangerous?
The distance of the Moon from the Earth is about 4 lakh kilometers while the distance of Mars from the Earth is about 3390 lakh kilometers. Despite this, experts believe that making a soft landing on the moon is more risky than on Mars.
1- Absence of atmosphere on the moon – The atmosphere is not present on the Moon like the Earth. Whenever an object falls from top to surface in the presence of the atmosphere, the atmosphere exerts a frictional force on it, due to which the speed of the thing does not increase very fast. Due to the absence of an atmosphere on the moon, propellant fuel is required which will help in a soft landing.
2 – Absence of GPS on the Moon – There are many satellites in space for the Earth, which provide accurate information about any place on the Earth. This case is not applicable in the case of the Moon because no satellite is present for the moon to provide the exact location. That’s why it is difficult to find the exact position and distance of the lander from the surface at the time of landing.
3 – Position of the Moon’s South Pole – ISRO plans to land Chandrayaan 3 Lander on the south pole of the Moon. The south pole of the Moon is on the horizon of the Sun, due to which the shadow is very long here. Due to this, the surface of the Moon’s South Pole is not visible.
